How to start an instant Google Meet

Need a Google Meet (Gmeet) call right now, without a day of back-and-forth to schedule it? Here are the fastest ways to start one, including the one that also invites your team and adds it to the calendar for you, automatically.

3 ways to start an instant Google Meet

1. Type meet.new

Type meet.new into any browser's address bar and press Enter. It's a shortcut Google provides that skips meet.google.com and drops you straight into a fresh call. You'll need to be signed in to a Google account.

2. Use "Start an instant meeting" on meet.google.com

Go to meet.google.com, click "New meeting", then choose "Start an instant meeting". You join immediately, with no date or time to pick.

3. Start one from Google Calendar or Gmail

Both Google Calendar and Gmail have a "New meeting" option that creates a Meet link on the spot. Useful when you also want the call to leave a record on your own calendar.

The catch: nobody gets invited for you

All three methods above create the call itself in one step, but that's all they do. None of them tells anyone about it or puts it on a calendar. You still have to copy the link, switch to wherever your team actually talks (Slack, email, a group chat), paste it in, and add each person to the calendar event by hand if you want them notified.

Instant Meet skips that whole second half. Type /meet in Slack and the link and the calendar invite go out to the whole channel automatically: nothing to copy, nothing to add by hand.

The manual flow vs. starting from Slack

Same result (a live Google Meet call your team can join), two very different numbers of steps.

meet.new / Google Calendar

  • Open a browser tab and go to meet.new or Calendar
  • Create the meeting and copy the link
  • Switch back to Slack and paste the link
  • Add a calendar event by hand, if anyone remembers

From Slack with Instant Meet

  • Type /meet in the channel you're already in
  • Bonus: everyone in the conversation gets a Google Calendar invite automatically, no manual copy-paste.

On your own, type meet.new into your browser's address bar and press Enter to drop straight into a new call, no clicking required. If you're coordinating with a team in Slack, /meet is faster still: it creates the call and invites everyone in the same step.
